STOCKHOLM GUIDE

since i lived in stockholm for quite a while i thought it could be a good idea to share some nice places with you - there is really so much to experience in this city. i skipped lots of the basic sights on purpose, cause i think you can find them anyway in every travel guide...

_

1. vurma: there are four places to be found in stockholm. my favourites are the one's in östermalm and södermalm - at hornstull's waterfront. the cafés are usually quite crowded, but they also offer an outdoor seating area. i recommend you to taste one of their delicious warm sandwiches - my favourite is the stolpskott - and a coffee and some wonderful pastries as dessert.

find it here: birger jarlsgatan 36 [tb-station: östermalmstorg / hötorget] + bergsunds strand 31 [tb-station: hornstull]

_

2. snickarbacken 7: is named after the street where it's located. it's kind of a café-shop-art gallery thing in an old stable. bohemian style with old cobbled together furniture and old wooden elements used at the entrance. they have a small but nice selection of drinks and food. grab yourself a coffee and go for a spin through the two shops or the gallery.

_

3. saturnus: a french bistro/café. you can find the biggest cinnamon buns in town as well as a big range of cold and warm sandwiches during daytime, different lunch assortments varying every day and a big brunch on weekends (sat+sun) they also offer a take away service for almost all of their products.

find it here: eriksbergsgatan 6 [tb-station östermalmstorg / hötorget / rådmansgatan]

_

4. sturekatten: stopping by here for a coffee is like sitting in your grandma's living room. sturekatten is the oldest confectionery in stockholm and usually super crowded during weekends. it's located in an old building and spread over two floors. i'd go for a cheese-cake or a strawberry-cream cake.

find it here: riddargatan 4 [tb-station östermalmstorg]

_

5. string: full of old furniture, from your grandma's couch to some chairs which could have been your parent's ones... and a lot of decoration from different places. string reminds me a little bit of an old gasoline station with it's signs and the huge traffic light. they have a good range of warm and cold meals every day as well as a big and great breakfast-buffet every weekend (sat+sun)

find it here: nytorgsgatan 38 [tb-station medborgarplatsen]

_

6. bio rio: a small cinema from the 1940s. an impressive make-over was done some years ago. there's this wonderful little cafe with very simple furniture and beautiful lightning - the chairs and tables are movable, so you can also use the coffee shop space for meetings or seminars. located just around the corner from vurma södermalm. find it here: hornstulls strand 3 [tb-station hornstull]

_

7. copacabana: a cute, colourful, little and queer-friendly cafe just next door to bio rio with a wonderful view over the water. during the warmer days you can sit on one of the the high wooden benches outside, watch people passing and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of hornstulls strand. this area is really one of my most favourite ones in stockholm! [pics via 1/2]

_

8. johan & nyström: a combined shop, training facility, coffee and tea bar with a fantastic interior design. i would go for one of their great, freshly made teas, they are amazing! there are thousands of different flavours, but the staff is incredibly nice and trying to help you with the decision.

find it here: swedenborgsgatan 7 [tb-station mariatorget]

_

9. rosendals trädgård: old glasshouses in the middle of djurgården. drink a coffee and watch the weather outside while being surrounded by tons of trees, plants and flowers. the pastries are delicious and the staff is supernice. my most beloved cafe in stockholm.

find it here: rosendalsterrassen 12 [tram-stop waldemarsudde or nordiska museet + 10 min walk]

_

10. debaser humlegården: a small cafe/restaurant which is only open during the warm months in one of the most beautiful parks in stockholms city center. i'd go for a strawberry daiquiri and sit on the stones right next to the bar.

find it here: humlegården [tb-station östermalmstorg]

_

11. b.a.r. [blasieholmens akvarium och restaurang]: the best fish-dishes ever. minimalistic furniture and white tiles on the walls. you order your fresh fish, seafood or meat directly at the display where you get a great view into the kitchen. on sundays they offer a special menu - you order two skewers with fish and/or meat and take different side dishes from the buffet. if you go there during the week i'd recommend the b.a.r.'s sandwich.

_

12. debaser [slussen/medborgarplatsen]: debaser is actually a club with lots of live-concerts and dj's but they also offer food at slussen and medborgarplatsen. during summertime they have a huge outdoor area at slussen, which has a great atmosphere. i can recommend you to take the chili beef burger (if you're vegetarian, you can get the same burger just with a vegetable-patty) and a strawberry daiquiri.

find it here: karl johans torg 1 [tb-station slussen] + medborgarplatsen 8 [tb-station medborgarplatsen] This place has closed in the meanwhile. Buhuhuu.

_

13. nytorget urban deli: a fantastic lively restaurant combined with a grocery where you can buy the very best food. you should book a table in advance, it's always overcrowded. order some fresh fish or meat at the display and see how it's freshly made in the open kitchen.

find it here: nytorget 4 [tb-station medborgarplatsen]

_

14. grill: nearly everything you can find in here is grilled. an amazing restaurant with a great interior. different themes for the rooms. from grandma's living room to the redlight district. bring some more money with you, it's little bit more expensive than the other ones shown above - but more than worth it!

find it here: drottninggatan 89 [tb-station rådmansgatan]

_

15. morfar ginko / pappa ray ray: a great bar with a restaurant area. have some drinks at the two bars upstairs and party hard downstairs. the dj has has to climb up a ladder to get to his area, which is right above the bar. a very laid-back atmosphere and lots of nice people.

find it here: swedenborgsgatan 13 [tb-station mariatorget]

_

16. bauer: located right at the upper end of götgatan, one of the nicest shopping streets in stockholm. a bar with a restaurant area in the back. they have thousands of cocktails and the best sushi in town. it could be perfekt, but the waiters are super lame and often very unfriendly. bring lots of time if you go there.

find it here: götgatan 15 [tb-station slussen]

_

17. story hotel: the greatest hotelbar i've ever been to. rough concrete walls, art and amazing furniture. next to the bar you can find a stylish restaurant and upstairs the hotel rooms with a beautiful courtyard above the bar-area. i spent some really nice evenings in here. highly recommendable!

find it here: riddargatan 6 [tb-station östermalmstorg]

_

18. f12 terrassen: located really close to the waterfront with a great view to the kungliga slottet. during winter you can party inside or have some (very expensive) food at the restaurant. in summer the outside area is open and hundreds of people enjoy the night sitting/standing on the stairs or having a drink on the upper terrace level. [pics via: 1/2]

find it here: fredsgatan 12 [tb-station t-centralen]

_

19. strand: right at hornstull's waterfront you can find a bar, restaurant and club under one roof. there are lots of great concerts but also some events during daytime. in summer you can sit outside, have a drink, gossip a little and enjoy the great atmosphere right at the water.

find it here: hornstulls strand 4 [tb-station hornstull]

_

20. trädgården: located under a high bridge in the south of södermalm. a huge outdoor area surrounded by some bars. a nice and urban place during the summertime when you can sit outside and have a drink and dance to the music. way better than the bars inside. [pics via: 1/2]

find it here: hammarby slussväg 2 [tb-station skanstull]

_

21. mosebacke: enjoy a wonderful view over the old town while sipping a cocktail. one of the nicest outdoor bars in stockholm. only open during the warm months. in case it's getting a little cold at night, there's also a bar downstairs. [pics via 1/2]

find it here: mosebacke torg 3 [tb-station slussen]

_

22. slakthuset: my favourite club in stockholm. in the middle of the slaughter house area near the famous globen. a fantastic but somehow macabre atmosphere, since you can still see what this building was used for some time ago. they usually hire great djs and the crowd is super stylish. win! [pics via 1/2]

find it here: slakthusområdet [tb-station globen]

_

23. berns: one of the most famous night clubs in stockholm with a long history. even my father has been there quite a while ago. stylish and fashionable people, mostly the fashion week parties and events take place in there. it's a hotel, restaurant and club all in one, located at a cute little park just some minutes walk from the city center. [pics via 1/2]

find it here: berzelii park [tb-station kungsträdgården or östermalmstorg]

_

24. urban outfitters: i'd say this is the nicest shop worldwide. looks like an old cinema from outside (actually it was one some time ago) with a breathtaking interior and fabulously displayed clothes. i know that you can find an UO in every bigger city, but you should at least hop in for some minutes and take a look at the shop itself.

find it here: biblioteksgatan 5 [tb-station östermalmstorg]

_

28. stadsmission: a second hand shop with lots of great and unique pieces. fantastic accessoires, funny shirts and items from the abba-times in sweden. it's even worth a visit if you don't wanna buy anything. have a look and stroll around for a while and enjoy the journey through swedish time. [pics via]

find it here: skånegatan 75 [tb-station medborgarplatsen]

_

29. dusty deco: a wonderful small place stuffed with wisely picked pieces from all over the world. you're looking for some special home decoration objects? i'm sure you'll find them here.

find it here: kocksgatan 23 [tb-station medborgarplatsen]

_

30. beyond retro: probably the most famous second hand store in town. a huge area downstairs with tons of old shoes, bags, clothes and other fancy accessories. you can also find some items of their own beyond retro collection.

find it here: åsögatan 144 [tb-station medborgarplatsen]

_

31. moderna museet: located on a cute little island with a beautiful view towards the old city. under the same roof you can also find the architecture museum, a wonderful bookshop and a small but nice cafe. perfect for a rainy weekend. [pics via 1/2]

find it here: skeppsholmen [bus-stop arkitektur/moderna museet]

_

32. vasa museet: you should have been here if you're in town. the story behind is simple as this: the swedes built a ship called vasa. she sank on her maiden voyage in stockholm 1628 after sailing barely 1300m and was salvaged 1961. today the whole ship is exhibited inside the vasa museet. it's dark and very humid inside to preserve the ship. you should really go there and see her! [pics via]

find it here: galärvarvsvägen 14 [tram-stop nordiska museet]

_

33. junibacken: you're never too old for this place. perhaps just too big to use some of the play equipment inside. you can find all the great characters of astrid lindgren's famous stories and lots of other scandinvian fairytale-figures in the most wonderful surrounding. more than worth a visit. [pics via 1/2]

find it here: galärvarvsvägen 8 [tram-stop nordiska museet]

_

34. saluhall: fresh fish, seafood, meat, cheese and whatever else you could ask for. a fantastic old building with the best products. you can either buy food and cook at home, eat there or have some warm dishes to take away.

find it here: östermalmstorg [tb-station östermalmstorg]

_

35. gamla stan: the cutest old city i've seen. wonderful tiny colourful buildings and narrow streets. some streets are super touristic and kinda annoying, but as soon as you take one of the side streets you can walk around nearly alone and experience stockholm from a completely different point of view.

find it here: gamla stan [tb-station gamla stan]

_

36. färgfabriken: it's an exhibition space and experimental platform for art and architecture as well as social and urban development. you can visit exhibitions, attend talks or visit one of their workshops. a really lovely place on liljeholmen which you definitely should visit. [pics via]

find it here: lövholmsbrinken 1 [tb-station liljeholmen]

_

37. riddarholmen: since stockholm doesn't have a real harbour to the open sea, you sometimes kinda miss the farsightedness. i found this place when i was in stockholm for the second time. it's just some minutes away from the old town. you have a great view towards södermalm, kungsholmen with the stadshuset and far west. a really nice place to simply relax in the evening. you are mostly nearly alone, since hardly any tourists know this spot.

find it here: norra riddarholmshamnen [tb-station gamla stan]

_

38. gröna lund: a fantastic old amusement park. like in the other nordic capitals it's located quite close to the city center - in stockholm it's even right at the waterfront. it's amazing to ride the rollercoaster and have this great view over the water. [pics via 1/2]

find it here: lilla allmänna gränd 9 [tram stop stockholm liljevalc gröna lund]

_

39. fotografiska: a fotomuseum up on the hill on södermalm. they have usually wonderful and interesting exhibitions, which i can warmly recommend. upstairs there's also hermann's, a vegetarian restaurant which is really popular in stockholm. from both locations you have a wonderful view over to gröna lund. [pics via]

find it here: stadsgårdsleden 22 [tb-station slussen]

_

40. vandrarhem af chapman & skeppsholmen: a hostel located in an old ship. if you don't feel unwell because of some waves i would recommend you to stay here for a night or two. it's just some meters away from moderna museet and about 5 min walk from the city center. you have a great view and a very nice cafe on the upper deck. the second part of the hostel is located on the island, right next to the ship. [pics via]

find it here: skeppsholmen [bus-stop östasiatiska museet]

_

41. old town lodge: i slept here just some weeks after the opening. a wonderful place. the rooms were simple, nice and clean. in the basement there are some bigger rooms with stone walls and ceiling. an amazing feeling! super friendly and helpful staff. i'd definitely stay here again. [pics via]

find it here: baggensgatan 25 [tb-station gamla stan]
